PROJECT OBJECTIVETo modernize and re-organize the existing High School Campus Quad. PROJECT DESCRIPTIONWorking with school and District staff and with RSH Construction, RA created a more cohesive campus space for Atascadero High School through a complete renovation of existing exterior spaces. RA developed a phased development plan (prioritized to work into a defined budget) that allowed construction to take place during the school year, all while maintaining students’ access and safety. The design incorporated features that would bring interest and learning into the project, including state geologic contour features in the steps, sundial, and inset tiles/surface materials with “lessons” of science and geography. Accessibility was improved with the new circulation paths and the addition of ramps, and stairs; while gathering spaces were introduced with a raised stage adjacent to the fine arts and seating areas. The result is an outdoor “Student Center” that entices students to stay onsite rather than go off campus at lunch.
