AWARDSAIA Central Coast Chapter – Award of Merit, 2006. PROJECT OBJECTIVEProvide entry-level sustainable homes within the context of an existing beachfront neighborhood. PROJECT DESCRIPTIONThis quaint community consists of seven new beachfront residences designed for sustainability and affordability on Sunset Avenue in Morro Bay, one of the most expensive communities on the Central Coast and just walking distance to shopping, bus routes, and entertainment. Ravatt Albrecht & Associates designed the Houses at Sunset Avenue to be compact, flexible, and affordable. The interior spaces are open, allowing for innovation and personal-touch by the homeowner, while a beautiful roof terrace maximize private outdoor space, encouraging the homeowners to enjoy their beach-front community. As designed, six of the houses are market-rate affordable and one is developer subsidized at SLO County’s “low income” level. The results of the sustainable design focus include sustainable hardwood decking, counters made of recycled paper, tankless water heaters, drought-tolerant native landscaping, edible landscaping (including fruits and herbs), permeable paving, and water collection using rain chains and rain barrels.
