PROJECT OBJECTIVE

Provide a permanent facility for the Unified Superior Court Clerks and Public Defender Offices that also incorporates the Mediator’s Office.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The Court Clerks building is constructed to replace two 25 year old aging portable buildings. The old buildings were crowded, and unsafe with sagging floors, and were energy inefficient.

The new building consolidates County offices, and puts public services in one convenient location. Public counters for Traffic Court, Civil Court, Criminal law, and Family Law counters that were scattered around the courts campus, are now in one location.

The 2 story building frees up much needed parking space in the Courts complex, and provides a more spacious environment around the existing buildings. There were narrow sidewalks between the old portable buildings and the Jury Assembly Building, now replaced with a spacious open courtyard.

The new facility is completely accessible to disabled individuals, with wayfinding signage, and an elevator to the second floor public spaces.

The building was originally scheduled to be built at the time the Michael Jackson trial commenced, and was delayed because of the intense traffic caused by media coverage of the event. Subsequently the budget crisis caused further delays, and only now has the building been constructed. The new building was funded entirely with court fees; no tax or bond money was expended.
